FAQ-Airbrush Tans

Is spray tanning safe? Yes. The products we use are Canadian-made, all-natural, and plant-based. They are dermatologist approved. Spray tan solutions only interact with the outer superficial layer of the skin called the epidermis and do not enter the blood stream. The products include Aloe Vera, Coconut oil and White Tea for skin health and hydration. Spray tanning is a safe alternative to UV exposure from the sun or tanning beds which are known to be carcinogenic to humans.

What is the active ingredient in the tanning solution? The active ingredient is Dihydroxyacetone (or DHA). DHA is derived from plant products, such as sugar beets and cane. DHA reacts with the amino acids in dead skin cells to produce a natural, non-toxic chemical reaction (called the Maillard reaction) in the surface layer of the skin (the epidermis). During this process, melanoidins are formed, temporarily darkening the skin. As the dead skin cells slough off, the tan gradually fades.

How long will my spray tan last? On average spray tans last 7-10 days, depending on how you care for your skin leading up to the appointment and your aftercare. For long lasting results, keep your skin hydrated using an oil-free moisturizer and drink lots of water. Things that will fade your tan faster include long/hot baths, hot tubs/saunas/pools and excessive sweating. If your work out and sweat profusely, you are more likely to see fading after five days.

How often can I spray tan? You can spray tan every 1.5-2 weeks. This provides enough time to exfoliate all the previous tan off the skin and provide a smooth base to accept the new tan.

How far in advance should I spray tan before an event? Two days prior is usually best to give a chance for the bronzer to wash off and the tan to fully develop. Brides may wish to wait three days to allow for a couple of good showers ensuring the bronzer is fully washed off to avoid transfer onto the wedding dress. Before a southern vacation, consider tanning as close to leaving as possible (ideally 1 day prior), as the tan will fade faster in the heat and swimming pools/ocean. Your spray tan should always be your last appointment—after waxing, nails, facials etc.

Does a spray tan protect me from the sun’s harmful rays? No. Spray tans only superficially darken the skin. They do not provide a “base” or any protection from burning.

When can I exercise again? You can exercise the next day (12-24 hours later). Keep in mind, the more you perspire the sooner your tan will wear off.

I’m pregnant. Can I spray tan? Yes, however, you should always consult your doctor before any beauty treatments during pregnancy. The products we use are Canadian-made, all-natural, and plant-based. They are dermatologist approved. Spray tan solutions only interact with the outer superficial layer of the skin called the epidermis and do not enter the blood stream.

I’m breastfeeding. Can I spray tan? Yes, spray tans are safe while breastfeeding. You may wish to wear nipple covers or a bra over this area during your service to avoid transferring bronzer onto the baby’s skin if you are going to be breastfeeding before your initial rinse. We can also provide you with wipes to remove the bronzer from your breasts at the end of your session.
